EDUCATORS: We strongly recommend that you consider The Children's Zoo for a semester-long project for your drama club. This series was orginally produced, live on stage and in studio, with a Bloomington, Indiana high school drama club. This series is a honest, medically-accurate journey into MODERN psychological assessment and treatment of some of the very-real challenges that adolescents face: eating disorders, depression, substance abuse, violent behavior, running away, schizophrenia, multiple personality disorder and more. It is a honest peek into the minds and lives of students today, and was praised by mental health professionals for its frank, open, and productive approach to a subject that is rarely discussed frankly and openly -- but which should be. This script challenges stereotypes and stigmas. Our production touched the lives of all involved -- and may have SAVED the life of a troubled young woman who was seriously contemplating suicide. She knew one of our directors, and because of her involvement with the Children's Zoo project, approached her for help -- and by doing so, found not only support, but treatment. This is not fluffy, teen "angst" network TV melodrama: This is a show aimed at openly addressing and discussing adolescent mental health, and it does so with compassion, humor and respect.
